About us
Launched in 2022 and covering over 1800 square miles, Raise: Cumbria Community Forest hugs the western edge of the Lake District National Park and stretches from Carlisle in the north to Barrow-in-Furness in the south.
We are a growing collective of foresters, artists and researchers, working with communities, landowners and regional policymakers to make a difference.
We are passionate about trees and woodland - and want to share that passion with others.
We plant trees to improve the environment and address the climate crisis, whilst creating social and economic opportunities to improve health and wellbeing.
We use woodlands as a place to come together, learn and create.
Through our unique forest culture approach, we connect communities with outdoor spaces, fostering a sense of place and belonging.
Raise is a neurodivergent-led organisation which actively works with neurodivergent participants, partners and practitioners. Wherever possible, Raise seeks to create positive opportunities for neurodivergent Cumbrian people, shine a light on neurodivergent experiences of green spaces, and celebrate neurodivergent cultures.
Raise: Home of Cumbria Community Forest
We are a member of England’s Community Forests. There are 15 Community Forests in England, located in and around our largest towns and cities.
Collectively, the work of the community forests has formed the largest environmental regeneration initiative in England.
For nearly thirty years, Community Forests have delivered urban, economic and social regeneration championing green infrastructure and creating high-quality environments for millions of people.
By planting trees and bringing woodlands back into use for both people and wildlife we provide new opportunities for leisure activities whilst enhancing biodiversity, helping us become more resilient to climate change, improving education and supporting healthy lives.
As well as England’s Community Forest network, we are also part of the Community Forest Trust, a national registered charity.
Community Forests have been transforming the landscapes and communities in and around our largest towns and cities for nearly thirty years.
Our vision
The forest on your doorstep
Our mission
We believe that it takes a community to RAISE a forest
We bring together communities, landowners, policy makers and artists to co-create, manage and engage in forests, to improve our health, wellbeing and opportunities, and to address the climate crisis.
Over time, we will establish ribbons of new planting - ranging from single trees in urban centres to new large woodlands - creating a new forest which unites communities.
How we work
Rooted in change
We believe in the transformative power of our connection with nature, places, and cultures. Our actions are guided by a deep respect for the environment, and a commitment to leave a positive imprint on the world.
Listen in spades
We prioritise understanding. We actively listen to diverse perspectives, valuing each voice and recognising that every viewpoint adds value to the conversation.
Grow together
We co-create with local communities, recognising their invaluable insights and contributions. Together, we amplify their voices, fostering a sense of ownership and shared responsibility for positive change.
Break new ground
We thrive in a dynamic environment, adapting swiftly to changing circumstances. Our innovative approach allows us to make a substantial impact, surpassing expectations and conventional boundaries.
Open the canopy
We break down barriers, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and empowered to engage with green spaces. Our commitment to inclusivity creates a sense of belonging, enabling broader and more meaningful participation.
